The average UK handyman charges around £35-£50 per hour in 2026, with rates running from £25 in rural areas to £60+ in parts of central London. Day rates sit between £180 and £280 for a standard eight-hour booking, and most tradespeople add a minimum call-out fee of £40-£80 for small jobs.
In our corner of Hampshire we typically quote £40 per hour or £220 a day, with a minimum half-day booking for anything involving a second pair of hands. Here's how those numbers break down.
What is the average handyman hourly rate in the UK?
National averages put handymen at roughly £30-£50 an hour. The spread is wide because "handyman" covers everything from someone hanging a picture frame to a semi-skilled tradesperson fitting a kitchen door, replacing taps or repairing fencing. As a rule of thumb: the more tools required, the higher the hour rate. A basic odd-job handyman sits around £25-£35, while a multi-skilled tradesperson with plumbing and electrical experience usually charges £40-£55.

How much does a handyman charge per job?
Many small jobs are quoted as fixed prices rather than by the hour. From our own books this year, the common tickets are:
- Hanging a TV or mirror: £60 - £90
- Flat-pack furniture (wardrobe, bed): £80 - £150
- Replacing a toilet seat or tap: £75 - £120
- Fitting a new internal door: £120 - £180
- Gutter clean, two-storey semi: £80 - £150
- Fence panel replacement (each): £60 - £110
- Interior painting, one room: £250 - £450
- Small fence or gate repair: £90 - £180
Call-out fees and minimum charges
Expect a minimum charge of one hour even for a ten-minute fix - travel time, parking and tools still cost the handyman. In London that minimum is often the first 90 minutes. We operate a straightforward minimum call-out of £55 in Yateley and the immediate surrounding villages, and around £75 for jobs in Woking or Ascot where driving time is longer.
Why do handyman rates vary so much?
Five things we regularly see make the biggest difference:
- Insurance and registration - a handyman carrying £2m public liability and a Companies House registration costs more than an uninsured lad with a van, for good reason.
- Skill mix - plumbing and basic electrical work justify a higher rate.
- Experience - 20 years on the tools usually means jobs take 40% less time.
- Van, tools and materials - bringing a full van means one visit instead of two.
- Waste disposal - licensed removal of old doors, units or fence panels is a cost some quotes hide.
How to get a fair quote
Ask for a written fixed quote wherever possible. For longer jobs, a day rate usually works out cheaper than paying hourly - we regularly find a day's booking covers what would've been six separate hourly call-outs. Always check insurance and ask for a local reference. Fair pricing, clear communication and showing up on time are the three things clients tell us matter most.
